Most workplaces have clear procedures for fire drills, first aid, and other emergencies — but what about mental health crises? Situations involving panic attacks, psychosis, self-harm, or suicide can unfold quickly, leaving leaders and co-workers feeling unprepared and unsure how to respond. Yet these moments are exactly when a calm, informed, and compassionate response can save lives.
This session equips participants with the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively when mental health emergencies arise in the workplace. We’ll explore how to recognize the warning signs that someone may be in crisis, including indicators of suicidal thinking or behaviour. Participants will learn how to approach these situations safely, provide immediate support, and connect individuals to the right professional or community resources.

Through discussion and scenario-based learning, this session highlights what to do — and just as importantly, what not to do — in the heat of the moment. We’ll also cover the importance of setting boundaries, ensuring safety for all involved, and supporting the broader workplace community after a crisis. By the end of the session, participants will feel more confident in their ability to respond with care, clarity, and effectiveness during mental health emergencies.
